This weekend I got to make my annual trip to Mifflinburg, PA for their wonderful German Christkindlmarket. I first discovered this town about 3 years ago when I passed through on my way home from another central PA school— and earned my first speeding ticket there! Upon sending in my fine—I found out that they had an old German community and that they had this Christmas festival…. Low and behold, I got called to perform that year…. Now—this is a real authentic market environment—which means- it’s outside…. So is the entertainment!!! Well, luckily, Friday starts with a performance for the elementary kids at the school… always a fun time… also—Friday night, we’ve moved the performance inside to a church. This was a very nice setting for Roger Latzgo and I to perform completely acoustic. The audience was nice and receptive as we told tales of German Christmas lore and performed some of the traditional and more contemporary Alpine Christmas music.
On Saturday- we performed outside from 1-2:45…. After putting on about 4 layers of clothes—it was pretty bearable to play… The audience was a nice crowd—sometimes dancing or singing along—but mostly appreciating the repertoire, in between checking out some of the great food (yeah—Scrapple sandwiches and Sauerkraut chowder!)
Looking forward to coming back next year…
In the meantime—I have a bunch of “Holidays around the world” school presentations and 1 more band job before getting some time off for the winter. (There are a few select January and February dates that will be announced soon—but stay tuned to the websites for more info…)
Don’t forget there’s still time to pickup Family Tradition cds for Christmas gifts at www.cdbaby.com/meixneralex.
Merry Christmas Y’all,
